Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Knee Injection

prp for the knee

What is PRP?

PRP is a treatment derived from a patient’s own blood, concentrated with platelets, which are rich in growth factors and proteins that play a vital role in healing and tissue regeneration.

Are you experiencing a pulling sensation in your joints, morning stiffness, or discomfort when you begin walking? These could be signs of joint cartilage wear, commonly referred to as osteoarthritis. PRP therapy offers a natural solution by harnessing the healing properties of your own blood to encourage tissue repair and reduce inflammation.

Osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee, occurs when the joint cartilage and menisci progressively break down due to trauma or wear and tear. As the cartilage deteriorates, the underlying bone becomes exposed, leading to symptoms such as pain, stiffness, swelling, and difficulty walking.

PRP injections is a regenerative treatment used to alleviate knee pain, particularly in patients with conditions like osteoarthritis, tendon injuries, or cartilage damage. It involves injecting concentrated platelets from the patient's own blood into the knee joint, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.

How PRP Knee Injections Work

PRP contains growth factors that accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. When injected into the knee joint, PRP stimulates the body’s natural healing process to repair damaged cartilage, reduce inflammation, and potentially delay the progression of degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.

A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn. The blood is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the platelets and plasma from the red and white blood cells.  The concentrated platelets are injected directly into the knee joint using ultrasound guidance for accuracy.

Conditions Treated with PRP Knee Injections

  • Osteoarthritis: PRP can reduce inflammation and slow cartilage degeneration in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.

  • Tendon and Ligament Injuries: Conditions such as patellar tendinitis or ligament injuries can benefit from PRP, which stimulates faster healing.

  • Cartilage Damage: PRP may aid in repairing cartilage damaged from injury or wear and tear.

Benefits of PRP for Knee Pain

  • Natural Healing: PRP harnesses the body’s own healing power, minimising the need for medications or surgery.

  • Reduced Pain and Inflammation: PRP helps alleviate pain and improve knee function by reducing joint inflammation.

  • Non-Surgical PRP injections are minimally invasive, requiring no surgery and little downtime.

  • Faster Recovery: Patients often experience faster healing and return to activity than with traditional treatments.

Results and Recovery

  • Timing: Patients typically begin to notice improvement 2 to 4 weeks after the injection, with continued improvement over several months.

  • Duration: Results can last 6 to 12 months or longer, depending on the severity of the condition and the patient's response to treatment.

  • Multiple Injections: Some patients may require a series of PRP injections to achieve optimal results.

Risks and Side Effects

PRP knee injections are generally safe since the treatment uses the patient’s own blood. However, potential side effects include:

  1. Mild pain,

  2. Swelling

  3. Stiffness at the injection site.

  4. Temporary discomfort, which usually subsides within a few days

PRP vs. Corticosteroid Injections

While corticosteroid injections provide temporary relief by reducing inflammation, they don't promote healing and can weaken tissues with repeated use. PRP injections on the other hand, actively promote tissue regeneration and long-term improvement, making it a better option for chronic knee issues.

Is PRP Right for You?

PRP knee injections are ideal for patients with:

  1. Mild to moderate osteoarthritis,

  2. Knee pain due to tendon or ligament injuries,

  3. Patients seeking a non-surgical option to relieve knee pain.

It’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider to determine whether PRP is the right treatment based on your condition and medical history. If you’re interested in PRP knee injections, contact us at Donnybrook Clinic and we will book you in for a consultation with Dr Sami Hameid.

Why Use PRP Knee Injections

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) injection are used for their regenerative and healing properties, offering a natural, non-surgical option to promote tissue repair and relieve pain.

1. Accelerated Healing; PRP contains high concentrations of growth factors that stimulate the body’s natural healing process. These growth factors promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and help regenerate damaged cells in areas like muscles, tendons, and joints.

2. Non-Surgical Option; For individuals with injuries or chronic conditions, PRP offers a non-invasive alternative to surgery. It can be particularly beneficial for people who want to avoid the risks, recovery time, and costs associated with surgical procedures.

3. Treatment for Chronic Pain and Injuries PRP is effective for a variety of conditions that cause pain, including: Osteoarthritis e.g., knee or hip arthritis Tendon injuries e.g., tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, Ligament sprains e.g ankle sprains, Rotator cuff injuries, Chronic joint pain e.g., knee, hip, shoulder.

4. Reduce Inflammation, PRP injections help lower inflammation in the affected area, offering relief from pain and swelling, particularly in conditions like osteoarthritis or tendonitis, where inflammation plays a significant role in causing discomfort.

5. Natural and Low-Risk Treatment, Because PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, the risk of allergic reactions, infections, or rejection is extremely low. This makes it a safer option for most patients, with minimal side effects such as mild soreness or swelling at the injection site.

6. Longer-Lasting Results Compared to corticosteroid injections, which provide temporary relief, PRP injections stimulate long-term healing by addressing the underlying issue rather than just masking the symptoms. The effects of PRP can last several months to over a year.

7. Improved Function and Mobility, PRP not only reduces pain but also improves joint function and mobility. This is particularly beneficial for patients with osteoarthritis or sports injuries who want to return to physical activities more quickly.
