Refresh Heavy or Hooded Upper Eyelids

Heavy, hooded or drooping upper eyelids can make you look tired even when you feel well rested. In some cases, excess upper eyelid skin can also extend into the visual field and affect peripheral vision.

Upper blepharoplasty, also known as upper eyelid surgery or an upper eye lift, removes excess skin and, where appropriate, carefully reshapes underlying tissue to create a more open, refreshed appearance while preserving your natural eye shape.

At Donnybrook Clinic in Dublin, upper blepharoplasty is individually planned around your eyelid anatomy, facial proportions and goals. The aim is subtle refinement rather than changing the character of your eyes

What Is Upper Blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the upper eyelids. Depending on your anatomy, the procedure may also involve conservative adjustment of underlying tissue or small pockets of fat.

Ageing and genetics can cause the skin and tissues around the upper eyelid to become heavier or less elastic. This can create hooding, make the eyes appear smaller or tired, and sometimes obstruct the upper or peripheral field of vision.

The incision is positioned within the natural upper eyelid crease, allowing the scar to remain discreet as it heals.

Who Is Suitable for Upper Blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty may be suitable if you have excess or sagging upper eyelid skin that affects your appearance or, in some cases, your vision.

Patients commonly consider treatment because their upper eyelids:

  • Appear heavy or hooded

  • Make them look tired or older

  • Have excess skin that makes applying makeup difficult

  • Affect the upper or peripheral field of vision

  • Appear asymmetrical

You should be in suitable general health and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.

Importantly, heavy eyelids can have different causes. Excess skin may be the main issue, but brow position or eyelid muscle function can also contribute to a drooping appearance. A detailed assessment is therefore essential before deciding whether upper blepharoplasty is the appropriate treatment.

Cosmetic vs Functional Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty can have both cosmetic and functional benefits.

Cosmetic upper blepharoplasty focuses on reducing excess skin and improving the appearance of heavy or hooded eyelids, creating a more open and refreshed look.

Functional upper blepharoplasty may be considered when excess eyelid skin is obstructing the visual field. Whether surgery is likely to provide a functional benefit depends on clinical assessment rather than appearance alone.

What Happens During Upper Blepharoplasty?

Your treatment begins with a consultation with Dr Sami Hameid, where your eyelid anatomy, skin quality, facial balance and concerns are assessed. A personalised treatment plan is then developed around your individual features and desired outcome.

On the day of treatment, upper blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation depending on your individual treatment plan.

A fine incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. The surgeon removes the appropriate amount of excess skin and may carefully reshape underlying tissue where necessary. Fine sutures are then used to close the incision.

The procedure typically takes 45–60 minutes, although the exact duration depends on the individual treatment plan.

What Is Recovery Like After Upper Blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid surgery generally involves a relatively straightforward recovery, although the amount and duration of swelling and bruising varies between patients.

During the first few days, it is normal to experience some swelling, bruising and tightness around the eyelids. Sutures are usually removed within approximately one week, and the eyelids continue to settle as healing progresses.

Your surgeon will provide personalised aftercare instructions, including guidance on exercise, eye makeup, contact lenses, driving and returning to work.

As a general guide, many people need several days away from normal activities, while some choose to take around one to two weeks away from work depending on their occupation and how visible the bruising is.

I am amazed and delighted at the beautiful results of my recent upper blepharoplasty . I attended the Donnybrook cosmetic clinic for a consultation with Dr. Sami for this procedure. The consultantion with Dr. Sami was very informative and all my questions and concerns were answered. It was a procedure I had thought about for many years and finally felt comfortable to take the plunge. After the consultation, Victoria cordinated the treatment plan set out by Dr. Sami and sent me a clear and detailed email with everything we had discussed. Victoria was so pleasant to deal with and also answered some further questions after my consultation. The day of the procedure was easy. I felt in very safe hands with Dr.Sami and Nurse Norma. Recovery was straight forward, and again I felt reassured by the team that I could contact them if I had any concerns. I am very happy with the results and can highly recommend this clinic for this procedure. Thank you all again.
